The present invention generally relates to single-board computers. More particularly, the present invention relates to the management of the power supply to a single-board computer and the supporting circuits.
2. Description of the Related Art
A number of innovative designs for portable computers have been developed in recent years. These computers are generally called single-board computers (SBCs) because the entire unit is built on a single board. The SBCs are usually small, lightweight and low power consumption. An SBC may be based on a variety of different architectures, including one or more microprocessors and a collection of associated on-chip and off-chip memory, input and output peripherals, and other electronic circuits.
Single-board computers are usually designed to be powered from an external power supply, and power control is accomplished via the on-board power switching circuitry. A power supply having sufficient capacity and appropriate operation characteristics for supplying power to an SBC may be very expensive. The cost of a power supply may be reduced if the SBC is powered from an external power supply, such as a wall outlet. For this to work, the SBC should be designed to operate properly in a low power standby mode. The SBC must be turned on to accept instructions and then returned to a low power standby mode. The SBC must also be able to transition between a low power standby mode and a high power usage mode.
Furthermore, the SBC should operate continuously over a limited range of voltages. The available low power standby voltage for an SBC is typically less than 5.0 V. SBCs must be designed to operate under these conditions. Thus, the low power standby voltage for an SBC must be sufficiently low to maintain the proper operation of the SBC over a reasonable time period.
